Last Thursday I had the opportunity of joining a collective editing workshop with Gabriela Matuszyk. I decided to add an entry about it, because I think it’s quite relevant for the conceptual and practical development of my translation project.
Through Gabriela’s workshop, I not only started to understand more about the role of the designer as editor and author, but also to think more critically about the content I’m working with and how, through creative writing, I could repurpose and reframe the material I have sourced.
During this workshop we created a reader, not bound to a unified theme, but framed in the context of a common location and activity. This made me think about the collection of visual and textual material I’ve been exploring around “Yesterday and Today”, so after the workshop I decided to experiment with creative writing by applying several of Raymond Queneau “Exercises in style”, to reframe and rewrite the story.
This workshop prompted me to consider the form and shape of the content in conjunction with its meaning, and to experiment “outside the computer”, using the limitations of material elements in order to produce publications and printed matter.
