How can systematic recording of material traces be used as a catalyst for reclaiming the design process in a time of continuous dematerialisation?
As my inquiry evolved through this first part of the unit, I was really challenged to consider the social and cultural context of graphic communication design and the challenges we currently have as creatives in light of the raise of dematerialisation and the acceleration of artificial intelligence. Starting with a loose focus on the study of form and narrative, I reflected on my making patterns and on my particular forensic approach to visual research as a core aspect of the design process, looking to collect traces of information for the purpose of translating, communicating and reframing. It’s this systematic approach to recording material traces what serves as the catalyst for my practice, and a process I would like to explore and expand on through my work.
