This week starts with a sense of disorientation and a bit of hesitation regarding to where my project is heading to. Through my latest experiments I have discovered the role of the designer as a facilitator, which has opened my eyes to myriad of possibilities of how to situate my practice. This week’s highlights have been: the “Technology” cross-year workshop (In relation to the ideas around interfaces and Adhocism as my antithesis), new thoughts on my developing research question (In relation to the designer as facilitator and where I see potential to investigate further).
01 Technology Workshop –
The insights from this workshop don’t solely focus on coding as a medium, but rather on the emphasis on interfaces, which resonates strongly with my studio practice.
Considering an interface as the intermediary between two entities, it becomes a mechanism that facilitates access to what lies within. As a designer, this involves not only creating the interface, but also ensuring it allows users to comprehend the content and potentially engage with it. It should be developed with considerations for accessibility and modularity.
An illustrative example shared was Boook.land, which serves as an interface for collaborative writing. What strikes me about this project is its foundation in the game ‘Consequences’, mirroring my earlier explorations of narrative in this unit. This prompts me to reflect on the essence of my studio work and leads me to consider that my true interest may lie not in constructing narratives, but in delving into and comprehending the essence of the interface.

02 Adhocism –
The reintroduction of this reference at this point of the unit is instrumental for me, as I realised how much of an antithesis it presents to my exploration of systematic design. Basically, adhocism consists of a general and loose approach to a problem rather than a tight and systematic one.

03 Reflection –
As I embark in the exploration “Adhocism, the case for improvisation’ as my contrasting argument, I reflect on the potential of adopting new ways of working and how systems and improvisations can cohabit to find better solutions. In a way, this idea of interface that facilitates the connection between now and then, resonate with me in connection to my exploration of memory through anecdote.
